This year’s theme Reclaiming The Narrative seems quite poignant given the heightened community tensions between far right and disenfranchised protesters, targeting individuals from a range of ethnically diverse communities earlier this year. Images in the media as well as on social media created shockwaves across the country and some described the protests as a step back into the past.
On a personal level, what does the theme Reclaiming the Narrative bring to mind this October?
To me, it is a reminder that while it is evident that there remain divisions in society regarding who has the right to live in this country; we must recognise that extremists are a small minority of society; not the majority. It must be recognised that while it has been a struggle to move past historic narratives suggesting that ethnically diverse citizens should not have the right to build their homes, raise their children and contribute to this society; great strides have been made in recognising the contributions they have made towards developments in health, science, education and business.
While change can be slow, with each new generation, there is hope that tolerance, acceptance and value of diversity continues to grow and enrich British society.
It is my view that a new narrative needs to be developed, which enables the progress made in the forming of a more integrated society louder that those narratives of the past. We could all be more intentional in taking the time to understand each others' differences and learn how best to accept, appreciate and value others.
I believe that for society to move forward and continue to grow, open communication is key. It is important to be curious about different cultures, be sensitive in your approach, appreciative of diverse views and willing to challenge our own biases. The results of this approach can lead to remarkable outcomes.
