Meet Fiona, a Neurology Specialist Physiotherapist who works within the Community Neurology Service. Fiona works in Nottingham City to support patients with long-term neurological conditions.

How long have you worked at CityCare?

I've worked here since March 2011, so for just over 10 years.

What are your day to day duties?

I see patients on a day to day basis for neurological assessment and treatment as part of a wider multidisciplinary team of amazing staff.

Some patients are referred to our team for a relatively short period of therapy, whilst others remain with us for case management for a longer time. They can be referred at any point, from newly diagnosed through to approaching end of life care, meaning we need a wide range of skills and flexibility to work throughout the range.

The uniqueness of our work is the extent to how holistic and wide-ranging our care is, ensuring no two days are the same! We have strong working relationships both within our team and with outside agencies, charities, and teams. We regularly have days 'triaging' new referrals and take both work experience and students on clinical placement.

What is the best part of your job?

It’s both the strong working bonds we have within our team and also the 'sparkling moments' where you see a patient achieve the goals they had hoped for which impacts on their quality of life, an example of this is when I recently took a patient with a head injury to a swimming pool for the first time since his accident, he was totally overwhelmed he'd been able to return to the pool which had been his goal for over two years.

What would you say to anyone wanting to join CityCare as an AHP?

There's a huge variety of teams to choose from and a supportive environment to work in, the benefit of inner-city working is both the variety of conditions you see and the experience of staff around you. CityCare also has a proactive approach to work/life balance.
